Having Your Penis Circumcised
We perform circumcision on many adults every year. It is quite painless as the penis is anaesthetised and healing is quick, sexual relations are normally possible within two weeks and the scar disappears in six months. We normally remove the foreskin with a scalpel and scissors although we can use a clamp device to the man’s choice. We can also operate under general anaesthetic if required. The main thing for you to remember is that unless you opt for general anaesthesia it is a procedure performed on your most intimate parts and we will need to inspect and handle your penis and testicles, discuss with you your preferences and in most cases review your penis when flaccid and when fully erect. We may also need your permission to induce an orgasm to ensure that we examine you in a naturally flaccid state. Many men find having another male conduct this examination to be awkward. For this reason we have an experienced female surgeon available.

Some Choices
There is some flexibility in how we circumcise you. Naturally you will want your penis head to be fully exposed when flaccid. However you can choose to have the skin tight when erect, or with a little skin remaining to help with arousal. The scar can be placed close to the head (“low”), or a little way along the shaft (“high”).

The other choice concerns the skin bridge, your “frenum”, that connects the head of your penis to the foreskin. This is very sensitive, like the inner skin of your foresf it is long enough it can be retained, although we generally recommend removing it with your foreskin.

We always conduct the examination prior to circumcision and can recommend what is most suitable for your penis.

The Operation and Aftercare
It is quite straightforward. We mark the skin, numb your penis and cut away the unwanted skin, then sew the edges together before applying a dressing that stays on for one week. The stitches will dissolve within ten days and there is no need for a follow up visit, although many men opt for a check up before indulging in sexual relations. When the dressing is removed the exposed penis head will be very sensitive for a few weeks, but this will soon reduce to pleasant level. AT first erections will feel very tight but this soon resolves. A “cold ring” will be felt where the foreskin was, but again this feeling will disappear with two or three weeks.
